KATHMANDU—The government has continued bulldozing settlements built along riverbanks in Kathmandu. Evictions have been carried out in Thapathali of ward 11 under Kathmandu Metropolitan City, while bulldozers have been mobilised in Gairigaun (ward 9) and Shantinagar (ward 31) on Saturday. Preparations are also underway to remove unauthorised settlements at Buddhachowk, Gothatar (ward 8) and Manohara Tole (ward 9) of Kageshwari Manohara Municipality. According to the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, a total of 871 unauthorised households have been identified—476 in Shantinagar, 162 in Gairigaun, 143 in Thapathali, 77 in Gothatar and 13 in Manohara Tole. Security personnel from Nepal Police and the metropolitan office assisted residents in relocating belongings, and authorities said the Thapathali clearance was completed peacefully with cooperation from locals. So far, 68 families from Thapathali have come into government contact, with more expected from other areas. Officials said the families are being transported to Dasharath Stadium for registration before being accommodated in hotels across Kathmandu. Household belongings are currently being stored at Radha Soami Satsang Beas Nepal in Sundarighat, Kirtipur. Authorities said verification of whether the displaced are genuine landless squatters will begin on Sunday. Those identified as eligible are expected to be relocated within two weeks to government apartments in ward 1 of Nagarjun Municipality, with longer-term rehabilitation plans to follow.
