Bagmati Settlement Clearances (2002)
In 2002, the government initiated one of the first major urban clearance drives, tearing down settlements along the banks of the Bagmati River that housed approximately 10,000 people. While alternative housing was promised, political upheaval at the time led to the abandonment of these plans, leaving the displaced population without permanent shelter and triggering further growth in secondary squatter settlements.
