Karnataka: 2 killed, 4,000 houses flooded as rain batters Ramanagara City Bengaluru Mumbai

Ramanagara town was partially submerged after Bakshi lakein Maruti Layout breached, unleashing a torrent of water into the Chikkahole, a stream that flows towards Arkavathi river.

Areas falling near Tittamaranahalli lake, Kudur lake and Kanva dam backwaters were among the most affected. The flooded localities included Tipu Nagar, Kolur, Gandhi Grama, Balageri and Arkeshwara Colony in Ramanagara town and multiple villages in Channapatna and Magadi taluks.

A man identified as Boregowda, who was going in his car on Bidadi Road, was killed after a tree fell on his vehicle. The 60-year-old woman slipped and fell from a bridge into a stream in spate below and drowned in Channapatna, disaster management team officials said. Deputy commissioner Avinash Menon, however, said they were waiting for further confirmation about the deaths.

About 160 sheep were buried under the rubble of a shed that collapsed in another village. Two persons in the shedwere rescued, said an official working with the district disaster management unit.

Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, accompanied by district minister CN Ashwath Narayan, announced an immediate compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the people whose house had completely collapsed and Rs 5 lakh in a phased manner.
