Brief narrative 36,000 Masvingo Residents Facing Water Crisis VOA 19 Jul 2015

WASHINGTON DC— Zimbabwe’s Masvingo town has been hit by a water crisis, forcing more than 36,000 residents to fetch the precious liquid from a polluted local river.

According to Prosper Tiringindi of Masvingo Residents Trust, told Studio 7 water taps have been dry for more than a week owing to burst pipes and poor water management in the town.

“Some stranded people in Rujeko township are now fetching water from the Mucheke River and we believe that they are in danger of contracting water borne diseases,” said Tiringindi.

He said the local authority should take swift action to avert an outbreak of diseases in the town.

Masvingo mayor Ubert Fidze said the water crisis is being caused by old burst pipes and the council is trying its best to address the situation.
