Armed criminals torch homes of Papua tribal chief and teachers

17 April 2021

Armed criminal group members burn houses in a Beoga village, Papua, on April 17, 2021

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Members of an armed criminal group (KKB) set ablaze homes of a Papua tribal chief and teachers in Dambet Village, Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, Papua Province, on Saturday. It is true that an arson was committed by KKB, but there were no fatalities, Beoga Police Chief Inspector Dua Ali Akbar informed ANTARA via phone here on Saturday. Akbar confirmed that the group had set the fire at 9:30 Eastern Indonesian Standard Time (WIT), burning down the houses of tribal chief Ener Tinal and local teachers, as well as an elementary school building. The Dambet tribe chief’s house that was set ablaze also functioned as a kiosk or a small shop. Meanwhile, the Dambek Elementary School building was not burned down since the local residents drove them away and managed to extinguish the fire, so that only the door was damaged, he remarked. The Newangkawi Task Force, a joint military and police team, has been deployed in Beoga to deal with armed criminal groups that have frequently terrorized citizens and the state apparatus. They headed to the location where the arson occurred, and the criminals fired gunshots, but the military and police officers were safe. Dambek Village is around three kilometers from the capital of Beoga and can only be reached on foot.

Two teachers, two health workers, two toddlers evacuated from Beoga

15 April 2021

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Two teachers along two health workers and their two toddlers were evacuated from Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, Papua Province, on Wednesday afternoon, over security reasons. They boarded a Smart Air plane that took off from the sub-district’s airport to head for Timika, the capital of Mimika District, at about 3:10 p.m. local time. The evacuation is aimed at helping them recover from a traumatic event linked to the fatal shootings of two teachers, Beoga Police Chief 2nd Inspector Ali Akbar stated. The small-bodied aircraft did not carry food supplies, Akbar told ANTARA on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, Maria, a resident of Beoga, remarked that the availability of food stocks, especially rice, had run low in the sub-district’s area. Hence, Maria noted that she and the other residents had begun cutting down their food intake whilst awaiting their evacuation from Beoga to help lower their anxiety. I do hope to soon be evacuated from Beoga for the time being, according to Maria, who admitted to being a contract worker during her stay in the sub-district. On April 8, 2021, several armed Papuan criminals opened fire at a kiosk in Julukoma Village at about 9:30 a.m. local time. The shooting incident resulted in the death of a Beoga public elementary school teacher, Oktovianus Rayo. After killing Rayo, the armed attackers continued their acts of terror by torching three classrooms of the Beoga public senior high school. On Friday (April 9), the armed Papuan criminals again assaulted another teacher, Yonatan Randen. This junior high school teacher was shot on his chest. Several villagers attempted to save Randen’s life by moving him to the Beoga public health center, but he died. On Sunday evening (April 11), the armed criminals set ablaze nine classrooms of the Beoga public junior high school. Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mathius D. Fakhiri has vowed to trace and crack down on the killers of these two teachers. The TNI (Indonesian military) and police personnel will never retreat even a single step in enforcing the law against the killers, Fakhiri stated in Timika on Tuesday. Fakhiri emphasized that the law enforcement units will make persistent efforts to trace and crack down on the killers of the two teachers.

Military, police posts in Beoga accommodate 42 displaced residents

13 April 2021

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Some 42 residents of Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District, Papua Province, have taken refuge in military and police posts and in the houses of locals over rising security concerns, according to a police officer. The displaced residents were all in safe and secure settings, but they would be moved to Sugapa Sub-district in Intan Jaya District, Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mathius Fakhiri told ANTARA in Jayapura on Monday. However, Fakhiri could not as yet confirm when they would be moved since related authorities were making the requisite preparations. In his earlier statement, Fakhiri stated that the displaced residents were being moved to Sugapa on account of the sub-district’s proximity to Beoga. The violent acts of the armed Papuan criminals are brutal, Fakhiri noted, adding that some 25 personnel of the police’s elite Mobile Brigade unit, stationed at the Beoga police precinct, had partaken in the efforts to secure and protect the displaced residents. The locals fled their homes to take refuge at several safe places after several armed Papuan criminals gunned down two teachers on April 8-9. On Thursday (April 8) at about 9:30 a.m. local time, several armed Papuan criminals opened fire at a kiosk in Julukoma Village, Beoga Sub-district, Puncak District. The armed Papuan criminals continued to pose a hindrance to the local authorities’ endeavor to transport the slain teachers’ coffins to Timika in Mimika District on Friday. The notorious armed criminals, who stayed put in the Beoga Airport area, allowed an aircraft carrying the coffins to fly on Saturday (April 10) after receiving a ransom. On Sunday evening (April 11), the armed criminals again conducted their campaigns of violence by setting ablaze nine classrooms of the Beoga public junior high school.
